Our State is the official monthly publication of North Carolina. The Book Club section features a different local author and one of their works in every issue. As the current resident artist of this section, I have the pleasure of creating the accompanying illustrations for the monthly write-up based on the book.
“We could see the geese on the far side of the lake, almost like a white chalk line, and then all at once they just took flight, thousands of them. It was like somebody waved a white scarf toward the sky."
Georgann Eubanks emphatically preaches the importance of environmental preservation. Her passionate recounting of snow geese rising in thousands at Pocosin Lake didn’t just invite me into the text—it felt as if the sheer wonder of her experience exploded outward from the pages. For the final rendering, I propped up a book at the library to create the perfect floating reference.
This piece swept up 6 awards in 2026, notably being chosen for the Booooooom Editorial Illustrated Award by my personal idols James Jean and Akiko Stehrenberger. Thank you to all the judges for the recognition.
