Our State is the official monthly publication of North Carolina. The Book Club section features a different local author and one of their works in every issue. As the current resident artist of this section, I have the pleasure of creating the accompanying illustrations for the monthly write-up based on the book.

In this story of a place, Simpson makes use of the talents for which he is best known. He observes with a naturalist’s eye, spins yarn with a storyteller’s knack for narrative, and writes prose with a rhythm hewn from years as one of Chapel Hill’s most beloved musicians.

In the short story "Decoy", a man recounts the story of a beloved town doctor who discovers an obsession with carving and painting wooden ducks just as the narrator realizes his own obsession with the doctor he’s long admired.
